| The
STANDING
MARTINGALE is simple in its application. The end of the body strap
runs between the forelegs and attaches to the girth. The top part attaches
to the chin strap of the noseband. Adjusted properly, this stops the horse
from raising the head above a certain level, and prevents the horse from
getting above the bit.
The RUNNING MARTINGALE
also
attaches to the girth, between the horse's forelegs. The forked part with
rings attached at the ends is designed to let the reins pass through. The
rein ends should always be fitted with martingale stops. These stops, positioned
in the proper place, prevent unwanted raising of the head. This downward
restraint acts on the bit, which exerts slight pressure on the lower jaw.
